Vision Inspection Systems

With technological advances in the printing industry evolving at a rapid pace, printers continue to evaluate and purchase products and services to gain a competitive advantage. The Center for Technology and Research at Printing Industries of America continues to stay abreast of the technological advancements that affect the printing industry in order to help members make informed decisions about the products and services available in the marketplace. One such technology is vision inspection systems.

Vision inspection systems were first developed in the early 1980s around the same time artificial intelligence and automatic robotic assembly started attracting attention in the manufacturing industry. Early systems were plagued by complex programming requirements, challenging installations, and poor performance. Improvements in technology provided the printing industry the opportunity to adopt vision inspection systems to improve accuracy and quality.

Early adopters were narrow web, gravure, and flexographic printers who required a way to check printed material from roll to roll. As technology continued to develop, quality-conscious printers began adopting vision inspection systems into their quality control process for different applications.

Vision inspection systems utilize five components to receive, analyze, and interpret the image of a real scene: camera, frame grabber, computer hardware and software, and data transfer technology. As these components continue to improve, vision inspection systems will become more sophisticated and powerful. Printers will have the ability to control a wider range of quality control concerns, such as color consistency, variable data, barcode recognition and verification, etc.

As equipment upgrades and features improve, decision makers must evaluate whether or not to invest in technology to improve their company’s performance and profitability. Dramatic changes over the last 20 years have forced printing industry business leaders to determine which technology will be essential for survival. Three main reasons companies invest in vision inspection systems are: customer demand, opportunity in new market(s), and improved quality and efficiency.

The printing industry continues to evolve and change as it always has, taking advantage of technology and innovation to provide improved products and services. The digital age has been upon us for several decades now and will continue to influence print well into the future.

This Web page is intended to provide a list of companies that supply vision inspection systems to our members, along with a few details about the products they provide and links to their websites.
