For printing/mailing personnel in a position to help customers with mail design, the seven-hour online Mail Design Professional course may be a wise investment. Successful completion of the course results in a Mail Design Professional (MDP) certification. The fee is a very reasonable $75. The course covers the classes of mail and processing categories, basic addressing, barcode formats, automation letters and automation flats, reply mail, and Address Information System (AIS) products (view curriculum).

The course is also taught as a three-day instructor-led program (view curriculum) in Norman, Oklahoma at NCED. Fee is $800, including lodging and meals. Mail or fax the registration form to sign up for the online or classroom program.  

Executive Mail Center Manager (EMCM) Course

The EMCM is a comprehensive program designed for individuals managing mail operations who have three or more years of management experience. Topics include operations, technology, finances, and sales and marketing (view curriculum). More than 1,000 people have taken the course and have been EMCM certified by USPS. The course is taught as a week-long instructor-led program, held in 2011 on February 28–March 4 and July 18–22 in Norman, Oklahoma at NCED. Fee is $1,500, including lodging and meals. Mail or fax the registration form to sign up for the online or classroom program.

PostCom records at least a dozen podcasts per year, 20–30 minutes in length, on a variety of topics, ranging from an update on the Intelligent Mail barcode to mailing software to the future of the USPS. Most podcasts discuss some aspect of USPS rates, service, or organization. This is a very good way of staying knowledgeable about the broader USPS issues that may have, or definitely are having, an effect on mailers.
