Additive Manufacturing: Driving a New Wave of Design Freedom for Electronics

I presented at SGIA’s FP3 Conference in June in Chicago. The audience included several key electronics printers in North America, who I got the opportunity to engage with both during following the event. My presentation examined how additive manufacturing processes are converging to drive a new wave of design freedom for manufacturers of electronic devices.Manufacturing ProcessesMost market analysts agree that the key markets for printed and flexible electronics are primed for significant growth over the next 5–10 years. This growth is occurring as flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) improve the functional capability of printed systems and stretchable products, and as structural electronics, in-mold electronics (IME) and hybrid 3D printing/printed electronics processes expand the physical design space. Design freedom and circuit complexity are critical to expanding market potential and getting customers’ design engineers to adopt printed electronics for a broader range of applications.Abstract Graphic BannerIn this presentation, we examined market strategies that can help to accelerate this cycle. Nexus interviewed dozens of end users, OEMs and key supply chain participants to update our database of applications where additive technologies are being successfully utilized for electronic systems in these markets. Over 125 new applications were documented, with healthcare providing the most examples. Keys trends were identified in six major market verticals – healthcare, sports & fitness, industrial, aerospace, automotive and consumer electronics.
