I remember going to my first show on October 31, 1977. It was my 25th birthday and my first day on the job. The show was in Anaheim, California (think Disneyland!), and my dad owned the company, so I was invited to attend. Dad and mom introduced me to many of their friends at that show, and I still keep in touch with a few of them (or their sons and daughters).
Over the last 41 years, I have only missed a few shows: 9/11 happened in 2001, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (my year to be Chairman of SGIA), one year I had hip replacements and last year, another hurricane scared me off. Overall, I am guessing I have attended well over 30 shows.
Over time, our company has migrated from 100% screen printing to 50-50 screen and wide-format digital printing. We have updated the shop many times because of the products and services available at the Expo, and I am proud to say that this is our 96th anniversary (the 69th in my family)!
For the 2018 SGIA Expo, my daughter Colleen will be attending her first show with me. I hope she feels the same love for the industry that I have. I expect to review the many technology improvements available and introduce her to many of my friends and others in the second and third generation that will be attending.
We are also looking to update our wide-format finishing solutions and research new product ideas at the show. SGIA provides my team the best opportunity to see a wide variety of equipment and products from which to make purchasing decisions, expand our relationships with vendors and visit with many friends.
