Hot Stamp Machine Operator

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for operating and setting-up machinery to emboss and /or imprint designs, lettering, numbers, or other product information onto the surface of materials such as paper, cloth, leather, or plastic. Responsible for setting heat, pressure, and time controls according to material to be hot stamped by performing the following duties personally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receives verbal instructions from supervisor, reads work order sheet, or inserts disk in drive of computer and depresses keys to retrieve job order slip and printing instructions.
  • Sets heat, pressure, and time controls, according to material to be stamped.
  • Installs and locks character wheel, embossing die, or stamping die in heated chase of machine.
  • Turns on heating element.
  • Inserts reel of specified material such as foil, gold leaf, coated ribbon, or plastic tape in holder or on spindle, and threads end through rollers which feed and guide material under die mounted on ram of machine or places sheet of foil over impression.
  • Positions and aligns item to be stamped under holding arm in bed of hand fed machine or feed hopper of automatically fed machine in position specified on work order or in illuminated window on computerized machine.
  • Starts machine which lowers ram to heated die or character wheel and ribbon to emboss and imprint item and automatically moves coated ribbon with each stroke of machine.
  • Submits proof to supervisor for approval before proceeding with production run.
  • Commence press run, continually checking markings for appearance, substrate and foil alignment, laminating, and stripping.
  • Upon completion of run, dismantles and stores dies, cleans all drive rolls, and returns unused foil and substrate to inventory.
  • Maintains inventory of various foils, and maintains a file of foil characteristics such as physical properties, compatibility with different substrates, and temperature range for best performance.
  • Performs general maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and equipment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Carries out conduct and leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED): or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standard situations.

The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic chemicals, and heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Some independent travel may be required.
