Paper pH can range from 4.0 to 8.0. There is no specific pH range or standard for paper. The pH of the paper is determined by the ingredients used in the formulation of the paper and the manufacturing process. Acidic paper combined with the acids used in fountain solutions on a lithographic sheetfed press can slow the ink drying as excessive acidic conditions can interfere with the cobalt drier in the ink. Acidic paper can yellow very quickly and is not suitable for archival printing. Paper used for archival printing has a neutral pH around 7.0. Today, most paper is manufactured with an alkaline manufacturing process and is neutral or alkaline, with a pH range of 6.0-8.0.
