Paper expansion or distortion is usually caused by excessive impression cylinder pressure and/or excessive fountain solution on the plate(s) transferring to the paper. Ink coverage, high tack, and the smoothness of the surface of the blanket can also contribute to paper distortion. Excessive fountain solution can soften paper making the paper dimensionally unstable. Heavy ink coverage will pull or put more force on the sheet; a blanket with a rougher surface will have better "sheet release" and pull or distort the sheet less. The variation in the fit on one of the presses is most likely being caused by these factors.
