Art Department Manager

Job Summary
Plans, directs, coordinates, and administers all activities of the art department including sketch art, production art, and finished art presentation. Determines quality level and establishes work procedures and materials for each level of work. Develops core of outside freelance artists, assists sales and marketing department with estimates, sketches, dummies, samples, or other materials for presentations by performing the following duties personally or through assistant personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review all sketch requisitions and accompanying materials, obtaining additional information from the customer and sales department as needed.
- Confer with salesperson or customer regarding background information, blueprints, specifications, objectives, presentation approaches, styles, and related factors.
- Formulates basic layout design concepts, or refers this task to Art Department Supervisor.
- Assigns and directs staff members to develop design concepts into art layouts and prepare layouts for printing.
- Assigns and expedites flow of work, and provides direction to art department personnel.
- Establish priorities for completion of various projects. Provide estimates to the sales department and Estimator, within established budgetary and time limits.
- Reviews, approves, and presents final layouts to customer or sales department for approval.
- Marks up, pastes up, and finishes layouts to prepare layouts for printing. Draws illustrations.
- Performs duties of those supervised.
- Prepares departmental budget and monitors expenditure of funds.
- Approve all requisitions for departmental supplies and expenses.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of supervisory and non-supervisory personnel. Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assisting, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphases on commercial art, computer graphic design; or three to five years of screen printing and/or digital imaging art department experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong skills in work planning, scheduling, and must have good judgment of color, design, layout, and print specifications.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and employees.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations of printing jobs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
