Art Department Supervisor

Job Summary
Directs, organizes, plans, and assigns all art department operations including creative design, composition, and art layout by performing the following duties personally or through assistant personnel. Responsible for the implementation of all departmental policies, practices, and procedures pertaining to art department personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive requisitions for commercial artwork. Inspect for proper color rotation and completeness.
- Studies production schedules and estimates labor hours required to complete printing jobs.
- Prepares departmental budget and monitors expenditures of budgeted funds.
- Interprets art specifications, blueprints, and job orders and assigns to graphic artist.
- Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
- Maintain records on all jobs including artist assigned, job identification, and specifications.
- Orders and indicates proper size and quantity of films.
- Reviews, approves, and presents final layout to client.
- Requisitions and approves all art department supplies.
- Performs similar work as graphic artist when practical or necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Responsible for the direction, coordination, and evaluation of art department personnel. Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assisting, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphases in commercial art, graphic design; or three to five years of screen printing and/or digital imaging production experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong skills in work planning, scheduling, and must have good judgment of color, design, and printing specifications.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and employees.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations of printing jobs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
