Edge Curl
Written October 16, 2019
Problem 1
Edge curl is curling at the edges of a finished graphic, sometimes described as poor "layflat".
Cause 1
Often caused by improper tension (too much or too little) on the film web during processing. Variations between the dimensional stability of the printed substrate and the finishing materials is magnified by improper setup.
Solution 1
- Adjust the tension of the film web prior to processing.
- Reduce nip pressure.
Cause 2
Edge Curl can also be caused by differences in the physical properties of front and back laminate films (for example, encapsulation), causing the components to react differently to changes in temperature and humidity.
Solution 2
When possible, match graphic components with similar physical properties, for example, vinyl and vinyl or polyester and polyester.
