Finishing Department Supervisor

Job Summary

Directs, plans, assigns, and monitors the activities of the Finishing Department, which consist of the flow of all finished materials; packing operations; sheet, individual piece, or roll inspection; overall quality control; and returned goods. Finishing operation may include any combination of the following: die cutting, hot stamping, laminating, weeding, packaging, folding, scoring, cutting, slitting, numbering, or any other process required to finish the printed piece before delivery to the customer by performing the following duties personally or through assist personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises the routing of all screen printed and digital imaged material through finishing operations.
  • Monitors the quality standard of finished goods according to company and customer specifications.
  • Approves material to be stored as overstock or recommends items to be purged.
  • Supervises the filling of all orders and the packing, skidding, and crating of all finished materials according to delivery schedule.
  • Supervises the inspection of returned goods. Issues credit authorization according to company policy.
  • Prepares departmental budget and monitors expenditures of budgeted funds.
  • Establishes finishing department operational standards.
  • Ensures proper operation of all finishing equipment, requesting maintenance when necessary.
  • Investigates the purchase and replacement of departmental equipment.
  • Directs, plans, assigns, and monitors the activities of the Finishing Department.
  • Maintains finishing department tools, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Responsible for maintaining finishing department production files including production samples.
  • Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of finishing department personnel. Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assisting, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or three to five years of screen printing and/or digital imaging finishing department or quality experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong skills in work planning, scheduling, and must have good judgment of color, design, and printing quality.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations of printing jobs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
