Laser Cutter Operator

FLSA Status: Nonexempt Alternate Job Titles: Cutting Technician, Laser Cutter Production Operator Laser Cutter Operators are responsible for the daily setup and operation of one or more laser cutting/engraving machines per the established production schedule. This position is also responsible for work area housekeeping, equipment maintenance, and material staging.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily machine startup and shutdown procedures on laser cutting/engraving equipment.
  • Setup machinery based on material type and thickness.
  • Load programs and set machine and laser parameters to ensureoptimum performance of the equipment.
  • Stage raw materials at each work-center for the day's production.
  • Maintain daily dust collector service and associated logbook in assigned area and report equipment deficiences.
  • Ensure production schedule follow through as allocated by the scheduling department.
  • Assist in loading and unloading machines when production requires additional manpower to maintain throughput.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of cutting equipment and work area in accordance with company standards and manufacturers machine recommendations.
  • Perform machine alignment procedures and cleaning to keep equipment at peak operating performance.
  • Facilitate work-order paper flow in accordance with company quality standards.
  • Check parts on other cutting centers per company standards if required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Carries out conduct and leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws.

Qualifications

  • One or more years experience operating laser and/or CNC cutting machines.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and production orders.
  • Transfer cut files to laser cutting machine.
  • Drawing/Vector/CADCAM experience preferred.
  • Load products into laser machine and program laser for engraving/cutting process.
  • Ability to inspect cut parts to meet job specifications and company standards.
  • Familiarity with cutting properties of metals, plastics, wood, and other materials preferred.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience in a fabrication, manufacturing, or graphics production environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have good mechanical ability.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and production order specifications and schedules. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute production rate, scrap/yield ratio and percent, and to interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with production related situations and problems that may arise.
