Summary:

The function, operation and principles of an electronic scanner whose output can be either color-corrected continuous tone positives or color-corrected halftone positives is discussed. Emphasis is on the recently perfected halftone system which produces typical photographic screen images. The scanner is an all electronic system employing a single scanning source. A cathode ray tube of high brightness serves as a means of scanning three separation negatives as well as exposing a positive image through one of the negatives. At the operator's selection this one machine can produce the required end product for use in platemaking for any one of the three major printing processes. The results of field testing, practical research and production experience with the Crosfield Mark III Scanatron are outlined.
