Summary:

Because of the growing importance of the photomechanical operations in the Graphic Arts industry, it appears that the time is appropriate to give serious consideration to the education of personnel specially trained on a collegiate level to cope with the many complex technical problems which have arisen. These problems will continue to grow in number and complexity in the future. With this in mind, I had proposed to the Papers Committee some months ago that I read, at the next TAGA meeting, a paper the contents of which will concern the education of what I choose to call the Photomechanical Engineer. Possibly some other term would be more appropriate. For a number of years, ideas have been crowding my brain until have felt compelled for my own peace of mind to put them down in writing. The paper proposes a curriculum which will train an engineer for a position in the Graphic Arts industry where technical background is required, and where the emphasis is on science and engineering rather than managerial problems.
