Summary:

In each step of photography and plate preparation it is desirable to know specific values of Dot Area percentage and/or Density that will produce Optimum Tone Reproduction in the final ink-on-paper print. Herewith is a simple graphic method of transforming the characteristics of the Bartelson-Brenenan Darkness vs. Density relationship to a reproduction curve. The results compare favorably with curves representing the tone reproduction of prints selected by panels as having optimum tone reproduction Values from this Optimum Tone Reproduction Curve may be projected to a curve of Dot Area percentage vs Density of Print to determine the tonal placement of control swatches.
