A computer program for automatically reducing a news story to any desired length has been devised at the ANPA/RI Research Center Designated ANPAT - American Newspaper Publishers Abstracting Technique - the program is based on a technique whereby it processes an input story by generating word. character and line counts and by creating analytical word and paragraph files. File content is analyzed by context concurrence and frequency weighting. The ANPAT program is the first known newspaper application of computational linguistics and offers a practical working tool for the reporter and editor.
