Summary:
The basic considerations in setting up a color-reproduction method for reflection copy are discussed with special reference to the reasons for choosing some of the specific recommendations in previously published methods. The variables in the process chosen have to be adjusted to obtain good tone reproduction, color balance, and color correction. Gray-scale measurements are used in establishing tone reproduction and color balance, and solid ink patches provide an evaluation of the color correction. The basic data needed are: (1) the dot areas or densities required to produce a neutral scale, and (2) the characteristics of the screening step, (3) the way in which the ink patches are recorded in the color separations through the various color filters, and (4) the amount of black which is to be printed. These characteristics, combined with observation of actual color reproductions, determine quite closely the conditions needed for good reproduction.
