Summary:

A report of a study to determine the required relationships between screen photography and continuous tone photography to insure a printed end product which will be considered satisfactory by the printer and the customer. The study resulted in a practical plant measurement and quality control system on a step-by-step basis and includes (1) color charts and charting system to establish screen positive and screen negative requirements, (2) relationship between halftone dot size in screen positives and density in separation negatives, (3) method to change negative tone reproduction as necessary to meet requirement #3 and (4) methods of measuring dot size. This approach involves the use of subjective methods in several areas, but they are used under rather stringently controlled and reproducible conditions so the psycho- physical and the physical aspects of measurement are related in such a way that uncertainty of the outcome is minimized.
