Summary:

The gravure industry has been handicapped by a lack of densitometer standardization. A survey was conducted in 27 gravure plants, which indicated wide differences in continuous tone density readings, screen positive density readings, and aperture sizes. A group has been set up to study the overall problem and develop effective means of standardization. Progress has been made on this task, the first step de- fining the major areas within the overall problem. New tools have been developed and are now available to the industry. Work is continuing in other areas.
