Summary:
The term model is one of many technological importations to the graphic arts. Earlier composition models were called estimating guides, etc. With the composition process itself in rapid change since 1960, appropriate models have changed not only quantitatively but in conceptual form. A good model is useful both routinely, as in production control and costing, and in graphic arts process and product planning. A modern composition model for planning use should have modular properties permitting flexible use with varied composition processes and operations. Other desirable features of composition models are noted, and an illustration model is described in part.
