Summary:

Shortly after the development of high speed computer weather prognosis, it became evident that an efficient method of displaying the resulting prognoses over the existing weather facsimile networks was needed. The United Aircraft Corporation Facsimile Encoder and Transmitter was developed to provide this capability. Using a digital input, the Facsimile Encoder and Transmitter was developed to provide this capability. Using a digital input, the Facsimile Encoder produces an analog output for standard weather facsimile reception. Originally used for the two tone transmission of weather charts. it is now also used for multi-tone cloud picture mosaics. The Encoder has also been a most flexible output device for a variety of diagnostic purposes in computer program analysis of the behavior of both sensors and spacecraft in the weather satellite program.
