Summary:

The urgent problem of producing hard copy from high speed digital output devices is seen as being soluble by an electrostatographic printing technique. The advantages of such technique, high speed and reliability, are weighed against the apparent disadvantage of frequently poor printing quality. The prospects for an appreciable improvement in printing quality are considered and found to be good. The method of operation of an electrostatographic printer is described and it is shown that its basic simplicity is inherently responsible for the high speed and reliability which feature these machines. Several actual printers are described and pictured. The paper concludes with a forecast of future developments in electrostatographic printers.
