Development of sophisticated electronic equipment to compile, compute, select and display information at prodigious speeds has progressed far more rapidly than the means for taking off hard copy at the output end. Most often only random capture of information need be recorded but such copy may have to be taken out at capacity machine speeds. Generic systems of producing hard copy are presented with current applications. The impetus of high speed electronic hard copy printout in the Graphic Arts is portrayed. The prospects by reason of performance, cost and convenience are weighed by instant hardcopy output.
