Summary:

Expansion of adhesive (hot melt) binding has been limited by the inadequacies of the mechanical devices for its application. Recognition of the need for precision equipment has recently stimulated the development of mechanical units to allow hot melt adhesives to be applied with full control and in reproducible amounts. Three areas of development have been: (1) dimensionally accurate preparation of the backbone; (2) control of the melting rate of the hot melt adhesive to the rate of use; and (3) the application of adhesive on specific locations on the backbone. Paper discusses machinery recently developed for this purpose.
