Summary:

This paper deals with an important aspect of setting up a color reproduction system, that of printing a scale of neutrals. Two new methods are proposed for calculating the ink amounts that would produce a scale of neutrals with any ink set. One method uses the Neugebauer and Murray-Davies equations to predict neutral requirements while the other uses empirically determined second-degree equations. From an experiment to test the accuracy of these methods it is concluded that the method using empirical equations is accurate for the ink sets tested while the method using the Neugebauer equations is not.
