Summary:

Proposals for new paper tape standards for the graphic arts have attracted a considerable interest over the past year. This paper reviews the theoretical and practical reasons behind these standards, both from an information handling and data retrieval standpoint. The applicable standards themselves are described, including EIA one inch paper tape and the ASA standard code for data transmission. These standards are evaluated in the light of their feasibility for use in the graphic arts. The use of present equipment with new tapes is also discussed, and several methods of converting existing equipment to the proposed standards are described.
