Summary:
For the publisher, newsprint is a basic raw material which should meet certain minimum end-use requirements. It must function satisfactorily as a medium for presenting news and advertising at a cost competitive with other media. The quality of pictorial reproduction on newsprint, as well as strength characteristics, must depend on the measurable physical properties of the paper. Knowledge about certain properties, such as printability, show-through, printing opacity, shade, brightness, moisture content, strength, and basis weight, is important in the production of newsprint. It frequently permits the exercise of economics in manufacture as well as in ultimate use without impairing the quality of the final product. This paper discusses recent developments in the newsprint industry for evaluating these properties.
