Summary:

Within the last few years, there seems to be a growing interest in using litho offset films to etch gravure to cut costs on cylinder preparation and withstand the offset competition in all the countries where the average magazine circulation runs between 500,000 and a million copies. The advantage of conversion is to reduce the time and costs of prepress preparation because of the much simpler techniques used for color separation and proofing. All conversion processes are based on the same basic principles which were already described, patented or published, some as far back as fifty years ago, others immediately after the second world war. Handled properly, conversion may produce reliable and repeatable results able to compete with the electro-mechanic engraving process.
