Summary:
In response to the requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970 and their local implementations, the gravure industry organizations, Gravure Research Institute and Gravure Technical Association have cooperatively established an environmental program aimed at assisting gravure printers in complying with regulations regarding organic solvent emissions from gravure presses. A gravure environmental laboratory has been set up at GRI with the equipment and the instrumentation necessary for conducting organic solvent emission sampling and analysis from rotogravure press stacks and other areas of the printing plant and the necessary procedures for sampling and an analysis have been developed. This paper describes the techniques used by GRI for conducting organic solvent emission sampling and analysis from rotogravure press stacks of publication as well as packaging and specialty gravure printing presses.
