Summary:

Today's graphic arts requirements for systems are based on converting energy to record, transfer, and read out data. Good printing systems must combine people, materials, and machines for optimum production and quality control. To understand the technological opportunities for graphic arts, we must start with a review of all conventional and some non-conventional graphic communication processes. The technology, as well as its advantages and disadvantages, will be reviewed for the following processes: Offset Lithography, Driography, Copier/Duplicator, Xeroprinting, Xerography, Letterpress, Flexography, Belt Printing, Gravure, Screen Printing, Electroprint, Spirit Duplicating, Ink Jet, Laser Print, and Charge Transfer.
