An analysis of various paper defects and the problems they can create in pressrooms. Also, a summary of some of the more recent problems faced by papermakers because of changes in printing methods and press operating conditions. In this discussion of Pressroom Problems Resulting from Paper Defects and Changing Press Requirements, we want to point out some of the principal areas of causes during paper manufacture and finishing, some of the reasons why defects can occur, and the problems they can cause on press. A recent survey of printing papers, both coated and uncoated, showed that the cost of claims resulting from defective or substandard paper averaged almost 1.00% of the net sales dollar. When this was broken down, it was found that costs of claims against uncoated book grades, made for offset printing, averaged just under 1.00% of the net sales dollar with claims against all other uncoated book grades averaging about 0.50%.
