Summary:

In order to store and retrieve the vast amount of information being generated in the graphic arts field, Rochester Institute of Technology has developed a computerized system called GAIN (Graphic Arts Information Notation). Articles appearing in periodicals are classified by an extensive keywording system and fed into a computer. Once stored on discs, the information can be produced via straight file, keyword or keyword-usage listing. These lists have two applications: direct use (for searches and index cards) and reproduction use (for periodic and cumulative indexes and for index cards). The GAIN system, though in its infancy, is expected to grow rapidly and to take on new phases in order to serve the ever-increasing need of the industry for information.
