Summary:

Transient stresses which arise during the unwinding of a paper roll are considered and some approaches to the problem of dealing with these stresses are reviewed. Details are given of a mechanism designed to unwind the web from the reel without stress, the web then being subsequently stressed uniformly across its width. The device has been field-tested at a newspaper plant (the South Bend Tribune) it proved valuable in running flat and out-of-round rolls at full press speed, and also for defective rolls which would normally have been returned to the mill.
