Digital prepress control of originals for printing is discussed from the aspects of data flow, information transfer and original-to-print fidelity. The choice of screening parameters and the adjustment of tone and detail rendering are explored. A control strategy is presented and its implementation in a laboratory scale digital picture processing system is outlined. According to the results obtained, image quality in printing can be significantly enhanced by utilization of a combination of information transfer and fidelity criteria in reproduction control.
