Summary:

Editorial image systems have to be low-cost and easy to use in order to be accepted by the editors. This favors PC-based workstations in spite of their limitations. The paper outlines strategies that have guided the development of such systems for several clients in VTT's Graphic Arts Laboratory. The benefits of close cooperation with client companies are pointed out. The bottlenecks inherent in PC-based image processing as opposed to large-scale systems are dealt with. The paper concludes with a description of two current development results: an image archiving system (FINSCA) and a system for printing pictures gathered with video equipment.
