Summary:
An integral part of device independent color is using the monitor of an imaging workstation as a soft-proof device. A common technique in desktop publishing is to use software to simulate a white point of D5000 on a monitor actually tuned to another white point (usually D6500 or D9300). This simulation is usually performed by loading RGB lookup tables in the graphics card with curves that accomplish both gamma correction and white point simulation. However, this technique affects the gamut of realizable colors in that display system. Numerical results quantifying the significance of this gamut change will be presented in terms of the original monitor's gamut and the gamut of a standard proofing system (3M MatchPrint). Multiple monitor types will be studied with differing base white points.
