Summary:

This paper reviews the two new phototypesetters recently introduced to Graphic Arts Industry by Fairchild. These text machines, developed for the newspaper and commercial markets, are described in technical detail with specifications. Unique hardware approaches are illustrated with photographs. A sequential synchronous principle for setting type is explained for one machine and nonsequential asynchronous principle for the other. Two radically different type font approaches are presented for a mixer and non-mixer version of the machines. Special purpose digital computers with high reliability integrated circuits in both models, and the use of a magnetic core memory for the high speed phototypesetter are also discussed.
