Prepress computer usage is headed toward the ultimate form in which keystrokes and artwork are converted to digital signals, and in real time are composed, reviewed, edited and viewed as softcopy that looks like the finished full page. Laser units will make final plates from the manipulated data. This Real Time Composition System (RCTS) means all present systems will become obsolete because they lack the expansive capabilities needed to fit into the RTCS. The systems now available are reviewed and their functions compared.
