Summary:

The paper covers the initial phase of an investigation of the variables affecting the tension in multiple webs feeding into a single folder of a newspaper press consisting of both letterpress and offset units. Tension in each web was measured during test and production runs involving a variety of web leads. Results showed that in a multi-web operation involving straight runs only, the sum of tensions in individual webs between press units and folder is approximately constant for a given setting of folder web control devices. Excessive gain in press components such as the Roller Front of Bars, causes considerable irregularity between tensions before and after the components.
