EPA Public Meeting - Prioritization of Chemicals Under TSCA Legislation
Aug 12, 2016
Revisions to the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) were passed on June 22, 2016, and EPA held a public meeting on August 10th to discuss prioritization of chemicals. SGIA attended this public meeting, where the EPA sought input on the procedural rulemaking that would focus development of a proposed rule. Under the rule, the EPA must identify chemical substances as either high- or low-priority for risk evaluation. The agency outlined the criteria for prioritization in either category, and discussed methodology for designating chemicals. Key comments by stakeholders present included calls for the EPA to use up-to-date and relevant information in making determinations, and the suggestion that a third category of prioritization be created for chemicals that do not fit in the high- or low-priority categories. EPA plans to issue a proposed rule on this subject in December 2016.
