Canada Proposes Stricter Lead and Cadmium Content Limits in Children?s Products

Health Canada has proposed regulations to restrict the total lead content to 90 milligrams per kilogram in toys for children ages 3 to 14, children’s clothing and accessories, and sleep, hygiene, transportation and relaxation products for children under the age of 4.  The proposed limits for children’s jewelry small enough to be swallowed by a child are for cadmium:  130 milligrams per kilogram, and for lead:  90 milligrams per kilogram.  In considering the lead limit which is more restrictive than those in the United States, alignment with the US was rejected as it was felt that it would have created regulatory inconsistencies in Canada.  The proposed amendments are open for comment until Feb. 15, 2017.  For more information, contact Marci Kinter at govtaffairs@sgia.org.
